In loving memory of the many loved ones I’ve watched die from lung cancer…
Today is World Lung Cancer Day. I am still in a place that is keeping me from doing much writing, so I am going to share a piece from last year as a substitute.
Stigma and Misinformation Maintain the Devastating Toll of Lung Cancer.
Could International Human Rights Mechanisms Take Down Vape Bans? “Relatively few governments (29) are parties to the First Optional Protocol to the ICESCR Covenant, so the Article 12 route is limited. However, most governments (116) are party to the First Optional Protocol to the ICCPR, so complaints based on the human right to self-determination could be more widely applicable.”
Do People with Diabetes Smoke Less on Semaglutide? “When people receive semaglutide for type 2 diabetes, are they less likely to smoke? This is not such a random question. In fact, clinicians are reporting striking reductions in addictive behaviors by people receiving it for obesity.”
Are Vapes a Gateway to Smoking? “Evidence for the gateway hypothesis can be interpreted in alternative ways”, she adds, pointing out that it can be argued that non-smoking teens who initiate vaping were probably already predisposed to risky behaviours and would likely have begun smoking anyway – a “common liability” explanation.”
Vaping Around Kids Is Far Safer for Them Than Smoking. “The new study—conducted by researchers at University College London (UCL) and the SPECTRUM Consortium, and published in JAMA Network Open—set out to compare nicotine absorption levels in three groups of children in the United States: those exposed to secondhand smoke only, those exposed to secondhand vapor only, and those exposed to neither.”
FDA brags about refusing tens of thousands of applications from small vape manufacturers. “In its new progress report to the U.S. District Court for Maryland, the agency brags that it has issued “over 18 million refuse-to-accept decisions, over 67,000 refuse-to-file decisions, and approximately 46,000 marketing denial orders.” Most of those MDOs were for bottled e-liquid made by small to medium-sized manufacturers, including many tiny businesses with no retail footprint outside their own cities.”
Joe Camel Wasn’t Why I Started Smoking. Or Even Smoking Camels. “But what’s happening in the real world is that a new generation is choosing a much less harmful alternative to combustible cigarettes. My generation was just choosing between equally harmful brands.”
